Canada?It might as well not exist. We get very little news from that country even though its part of the Commonwealth, and the Queen is still their head of State.Lots of British people go on holiday there, and even more have gone to work there.We still comtinue to ignore this huge country.The United States is such a massive presence in our collective consciousness that Canada is like the nerdy(and very polite) sister who is totally overshadowed by her louder, sexier sister who is ALWAYS the centre of attention.IT MUST SUCK!
One of the unfortunate things for Canadians is that they are on the same continent as the United States, and they sound (to our British ears)quite the same.How many times do Canadians get mistaken for Yanks?That must be the most annoying thing in the world.
Look at the amount of Canadian actors who have gone to Hollywood: Donald Sutherland,Jim Carrey,Joshua Jackson,Margot Kidder, Dan Ackroyd,Pamela Anderson,Natasha Henstridge and Micheal J Fox.That kind of talent migration must further erode Canada's sense of itself in the world.
There is a good point.Since 9/11 and the rise of anti Americanism, a lot of Americans who realised just how unpoplular they are around the world.The Administration of George Bush has played to the stereotype of the Ugly American- loud,ignorant and aggressive.
