I never understood why the Union Jack seemed to be a source of shame or nervousness. It is the national flag, we should be proud of it.In the United States, people willingly fly their flags on their lawn.Politicians wear lapel pins in the shape of the flag. All political willingly state their love of their country.Notice how quickly Barack Obama started to wear the Stars and Stripes on his lapel?
Why don't politicians wear lapel badges with the Union Jack? Are we frightened of upsetting people?By the way, who are the people who are supposedly upset by the flag?Should we not be proud of this country?Don't forget that for all it's faults, Britain has given the world, Dickens, Shakespeare, the Beatles and HG Wells.
Well, it's been great that the Olympic Games have seen caused a burst of patriotism and pride. Winners of medals have draped themselves in the flag and why not? We should be express our love for this country more often.
We know that there are people who hate this country. For political/cultural/religious reasons these people use the flag to divide us as a nation.Whether they be from the far Right or Islamic exremists, we need face them down. The flag is one of the few symbols that unites us.
Now if someone gets upset because if I wear a Union Jack, then I can say "Screw you, it's a free country."

Of course you can say that, it is a free country, though 'screw you' is a bit of an Americanism, isn't it?
As for the Union Flag (a jack flutters on a ship), I am pleased you like it too. I think its one of the best designed flags in the world.
