If you caught GMTV this morning, you would have seen the family of Garry Newlove, the man who was killed(kicked to death) in Warrington by teenage yobs.His widow and his daughters have been devastated by this tragedy.We will never understand the pain and heartbreak that they live with.

The question we must ask is:what now?We must forget about the why.We know that answer.It's poor parenting,poor schooling, alcohol,boredom,gang culture and lack of respect. It's also the uselessness of the police. It's also a sad indictment on New Labour.Ten years after being in power, they have failed to deal with crime.Instead we get endless statistics ie lies telling us that we are safer than ever.

I think its time that the gloves come off.If that sounds Daily Mail-ish, then so be it.

We need to have more prisons built, with real life sentences handed down for violent offenders.If the police need more more money then that has be found on the proviso that they get out of their cars,stop filling in endless forms and go back on the beat.If this can happen in New York, then it can happen in London.

The Police seem to have vanished off our streets.Where are they?If we have Community Safety Wardens and all the other pseudo-bobbies, where are the real police?

We also need to have a discussion on the death penalty.Should it be bought back as the ultimate sanction for violent thugs?The public should have chance to vote.If the majority decides yes, the government of whichever party has a real choice to make.There would be no doubt that the likes of Ian Huntley,Rose West, and Harold Shipman would deserve the rope/electric chair/injection needle or gas chamber. What about the yobs who deliberately kill an innocent member of the public?

The politicians have got to chuck away the soundbites and the photo-ops.We want real policies and a real debate.One politician who is now a former Labour Prime Minister, once talked about being tough on crime and the causes of crime.Now he's too busy raking in the mega bucks.

What happened to his policy on crime?Was it all just hot air?
